Grace Jones (Ventures in Vogue)
Before Naomi took the title of Jamaica’s prized yet disgruntled supermodel. Before pretty girls shaved their heads for sport. And way before Lady Gaga could spell hermaphrodite, much less claim to be one (yeah, I don’t believe her), there was only ONE Queen of Shock and Awe.
The epitome of androgyny, Grace Jones.
Jones is best known to us 80’s babies as “Strange” (from the movie Boomerang) and better known to the 90’s babies as “…who?” (I joke I joke lol). Her style had a heavy influence on major fashion trends: the women’s cross-dressing movement of the 80’s as well as her famous “flat top” hairstyle that reigned supreme amongst black men in the late 80’s and early 90’s. (No, fellas, Big Daddy Kane didn’t do it first.)
As a recording artist, Jones has released 10 albums to date, best known for her hit single “Pull Up To My Bumper” (later covered by Reggae artist Patra). She is currently touring for her latest album, Hurricane (get ‘em gurl!).
[do you know when she released her first album? and how many records she has sold? could use that in the above paragraph]
One time muse for the late icon, Andy Warhol (google if you don’t know him), Grace’s style, beauty and “in your face” edge is truly undeniable . . . I dare you to turn away!
I’ve always been a rebel. I never do things the way they’re supposed to be done. Either I go in the opposite direction or I create a new direction for myself, regardless of what the rules are or what society says. ~ Grace Jones
