“Video Phone” Aftermath: The Fans That Were Hung up, Are Now Disconnected?

Unless you had no access to a computer or Wifi connection last night, it was common knowledge that Beyonce’s “Video Phone” music video featuring Lady Gaga was leaked. As usual, with anything Bey, folks either LOVED every second of it—or LOATHED it to pieces.

Comments that blasted all over twitter and youtube over the five-minute video were positive for some, but the negative comments dominated.

Folks went on a rant about how sick they are of seeing Beyonce in leotards; the video was hypersexual and made no sense; Beyonce is trying to be like Rihanna and/or Gaga; Beyonce’s act is getting old, etc., etc.

Okay, I can admit for a video premiere that was sooo hyped up, we all did expect an epic Michael Jackson-esque mini movie—and that didn’t happen. BUT there are a few things that I want to make clear in Beyonce’s defense to all the “Video Phone” hate (yes I am a fan lol).

1. The song is by SASHA FIERCE not BEYONCE (It sounds crazy, I know lol)

I dont know if some of you noticed, but when Beyonce released her 2-disc album (“I Am…” and “I Am… Sasha Fierce”) one disc featured songs that are very fitting to Beyonce: “If I Were A Boy,” “Ave Maria,” “Halo,” etc. While the other disc featured songs that are fitting to her stage alter ego “Sasha Fierce”: “Single Ladies,” “Video Phone,” “Diva,” etc.

Sasha Fierce sings lyrical content that is very vain, egotistical, and Diva-esque, so naturally her videos match the persona she sings about. And it’s the same with Beyonce’s videos matching up with her sweet “in love with being in love” persona (cuz she sure ain’t droppin’ it like it’s hot in “Halo” or “If I Were A Boy”).

Rapper T.I. did the similar “self vs. alter ego” style with his “T.I. vs. T.I.P.” album.

2. Listen to the lyrical content of VIDEO PHONE & the music video pretty much matches up.

[exerpt from "Video Phone" ...]

You like it when I shake it
Shawty on a mission, what your name is?
What? you want me naked?
If you liking this position you can tape it on your video phone …

In the age of sex tapes, twitpics, drunk tweets and “sexting,” this song is quite current (lol) and the video goes right along with the flow.

SONG/VIDEO PREMISE: An attractive woman, boasting to a man about how sexy she is and how much he wants her. Simple enough.

Many have made complaints about the music video for “Video Phone” saying it’s too sexy, but umm do you not hear those lyrics? And, in all honesty, that video was pretty PG-13 compared to some other videos that have premiered recently *coughs* (TREY SONGZ).

3. The fashion styles might be similar but just like the other female artists, Beyonce is in her own lane.

Like I said in the Rihanna the Swaggerjacker? post, fashion’s door is ever-revolving. Everyone borrows, steals, copies, and revamps everyone else and then calls it brand new. If everyone was 100% original, there would be no such thing as a fashion “fad” or “trend.” So, of course, you are going to see Beyonce, Gaga and Rihanna in similar ensembles and styles by the same designers….

THEY ARE THE “IT” GIRLS RIGHT NOW WEARING THE HOTTEST DESIGNERS RIGHT NOW!

Long story short, stop the madness. The video might not have been THRILLER-WORTHY (what video other than THRILLER is?). But at the end of the day, you know you love yourself some Bey! lol

I agree with you but at the same time disagree. It’s all good that she has an alter ego Sasha Fierce whose lyrics are a little wack (my opinion) I didn’t personally like this album at all. Her last album B-Day had songs that you could say were similar to what the Sasha Fierce portrays but she had innovative videos to match……the last 4 Sasha Fierce videos look the same with just a wardrobe change. I think she is getting too comfortable that’s all, she needs to step her game up to stay on top or Rihanna definitely gonna take that top spot.

I’m with you 100% Mika. I never understood all the Beyonce haters. The woman is ON TOP of the game right now. She can sing, dance, and put on a real performance. There really is no one else right now that can do what she does. I think everyone gets blind-sided by clothes and videos, which of course make a major impact, but are still the preverbial “smoke and mirrors.”
Africa, Rihanna is a style icon right now, indisputable; Beyonce is not. But at the end of the day if you put her, Kerri Hilson, and Rihanna in one concert, who’s actual TALENT do you think will shine, and who’s stage presence will make you wanna check your Twitter updates…? (Real talk, I’ve seen all 3 perform live.)

I’m with Afreekah on this one. I totally understand the Sasha Fierce thing but alter ego does not equal repetition. The video is just a little too sexual to be considered “good”. Seems like absolutely no thought was put into that video or lyrics. We understand she has a body…ok…now do something actually FIERCE!! She cool as a “pop singer” but top of the game…not so much.
