We all know Marilyn Monroe as one of the most iconic personalities in American pop culture. But there was another blonde bombshell that personified “sex” and proudly wore the title- literally. Actress Jayne Mansfield used sex appeal as her claim to fame. And being that her nickname was “40-21-32″ (her measurements), Mansfield made sure her God-given pin up assets kept her at the top.

Jayne loved using the public eye as her opportunity to shock, awe and steal the spotlight, and the main attraction was always her beautiful, innocent face and hourglass figure.

“If you’re going to do something wrong, do it big, because the punishment is the same either way.” -Jayne Mansfield

Mansfield’s sense of style was undeniable with no regrets or apologies.

Salute to the risk taker….

DID YOU KNOW
-Jayne is the biological mother of “Law and Order: SVU” star Mariska Hargitay (Det. Olivia Benson).
-Mansfield was the first mainstream Hollywood star to be nude in motion picture.

Since hearing about the passing of one of my style icons, I’ve been racking my brain on trying to find the most immaculate collection of words to say to represent who she was and what an influence she has on me. Then I stumbled upon a July 2009 article from Vanity Fair that embodied EXACT who Lena was.

A perfectionist. The word SETTLE was never in her vocabulary. Never afraid to tell you want she wants and all the while remaining a class act with beauty and grace for days.

Lena Horne became a star with her performance in the 1943 film Stormy Weather, one of the few Hollywood musicals of that era to feature mostly African-American performers. But because of her race, the Brooklyn-born singer and actress was never considered for the dramatic roles she craved. Instead, she was usually featured in single numbers, wearing elegant gowns, often standing in front of a pillar. In the mid-1950s, approaching 40 but still beautiful and sultry, a frustrated Horne left Hollywood to focus on singing—a move that would transform her into one of the most successful and beloved performers of the 60s, 70s, and 80s.

Rest In Perfection and thank you

Excerpt from Vanity Fair.

The REAL wait is ova! Soul singer, Sadé, is finally releasing her sixth album entitled “Soldier of Love” on February 8th, and, personally, I am highly excited!

Sadé has always been known for her “baby making” music and soothing voice; but it’s her breath taking beauty, as well as soft and sensual style that brings everything together for the full Sadé experience.

As a former fashion student, Sadé has always displayed her great sense of style. From signature looks such as her backless flowing dresses, mid-drift baring ensembles, slick back pony tail hair and fire engine red lipstick, Sadé’s style always spelled L-O-V-E.

It’s evident that Sadé’s lyrical content reflects phases of love, so naturally her style and video imagery reflects that as well: bold yet humble; strong yet vulnerable; sexy yet classy.

In 2010, it’s very rare that an artist whose career runs THREE decades long stays true to who they are from day one, considering the music industry is very fickle and ever evolving.

Yet Sadé is definitely a wonderful exception to that rule.

Salute, To The Risk Taker.

American painter, print & film maker, Andy Warhol is one of the most important figures of American—and possibly the epitome of—American pop culture. As leader of the Pop Art Movement, Warhol created famous artworks of iconic products such as “100 Soup Cans,” “100 Coke Bottles,” and various paintings of celebrities like Elizabeth Taylor, Muhammad Ali, and, of course, Marilyn Monroe.

In addition to products and celebrities, Andy also made political and social statements with artworks that featured imagery of atomic mushroom clouds, civil rights protesters being attacked by police dogs, and electric chairs. Images that were pivotal to the events of 1960′s America.

Warhol’s influence is undeniable. His studio, “The Factory,” was known as the exclusive hang out for his diverse social circles that included Bohemian artists, Hollywood’s elite and wealthy aristocrats. Warhol has been featured in documentaries, songs, books, and exhibits in countless numbers of museums and has even coined the term “15 minutes of fame” that is obviously still used to this day.

Although many critics during his time attacked his style of art, claiming it capitalized on consumerism and called it “Marketing Art.” But little did they know that Warhol’s new style of imagery was about to change American culture as we knew it.

One of my all time FAV artists, Kelis, tweeted a link to her brand new song on Monday after a long hiatus. The track is called “Acapella” and it’s produced by David Guetta. The song has a cool dance/techno vibe that will definitely be received well in the dance clubs.

Kelis has always been one to push the envelope and stay way ahead of the game when it comes to fashion. Whether we loved Kelis for it or thought it was a hot ass mess, a lot of the styles seen on many of Hollywood’s finest—Kelis has already been there and done that. So it’s always interesting to see where she takes us next!

On her website (www.iamkelis.com), Kelis sent a special message explaining her hiatus, her new record deal, soon-to-be released album, and other future endeavors:

Well, walking through the streets of NY this summer… I use the term walking loosely… was extremely pregnant and probably doing more of a very slow creep down each humid sticky block… people had so much to say to me. You know us New Yorkers don’t ever keep anything to our selves… I was asked if I would ever put another album out; I suppose people assumed after the baby and divorce and all the time I took off (went to culinary school during my break which was amazing and another conversation that it would be on to motherhood for me. And well that’s true… as I lay here with my perfect little won ton now writing you all this message. My answer was always the same, “Soon come guys” ;) and so here we are. My album is pretty much done. I signed a new deal and I’m madly in love with life and ready to share something with you. My song is called “Acapella,” and I wrote it with love and life in mind. I hope that it finds you well and that you love it, cause honestly I do! Muah – Kelis

P.S. To all the people who have stuck around and supported me all these years do know that I sincerely feel you and love you! We did this all together. Live well xoxo

I cannot WAIT for the new album and the new fashion trend Kelis will create! Woooo! (Lol)

Solange Knowles

Since Spring of this year, Solange Knowles has been quite the topic banter for the blogs & Trending Topic compatible for Twitter. From her nonchalant ranting Tweets, bold fashion statements on and off the stage, and, of course, her recent tress chop, whether negative or positive, Solange definitely knows how to grab our attention without trying—or caring.

Many in the past have accused Ms. Knowles of being an attention whore, trying too hard, a horrible dresser, has been questioned why designers love her, why Armani would ever give her the honor of Armani Ambassador—and even called her "crazy."

But in recent days there’s been a complete 180 in Solange critiques from the masses. I’ve noticed a sudden gravitation, so to speak, since Solange made a cameo on Oprah for the "Good Hair" discussion with Chris Rock, and her most recent photoshoot with Honey magazine. Many anti-Solange bus riders started hoping on the bandwagon with the sudden epiphany of how beautiful, smart and stylish she is becoming … What?

Here’s a clip from Solange’s interview on The Oprah Show. Pay attention to Chris Rock when this stunning beauty hits the stage—CLASSIC lol.

Yes, the majority of the same bloggers and tweeties that dogged her for her hair and fashion choices all these years are now her biggest fans. The way everyone "loves to love them some Solo" you would think she got a brand new album or song that just came out.

My question is, why the sudden fascination? Did the oh-so taboo haircut finally grow on you? Did Fashion Week 2009 finally make you realize how stylish and ahead of the game she is? Or does Oprah and Chris Rock have the almighty stamp of approval for you to like someone?

NEWS FLASH: Solange has ALWAYS been the fashionista she is now. Edgy, in your face and avant garde both in style and culture. This is why I salute this risk taker!

I love when someone’s personal sense of style speaks in such high volumes that you dont need for them to ever utter a word. That is what Solange brings to the table (and MORE) and that is exactly what ART is. So I guess I’m glad everyone is seeing what true fashion lovers have been seeing all along.

Here is Solo’s interview/photoshoot with Honey Magazine: Enlightntening and intelligent, but we wouldn’t expect anything less. :)

Other than the awkwardness of Kanye and Lil Mama, Lady GaGa’s fashion choices were the talk of the town during the VMAs on Sunday night. I personally was tickled pink and highly entertained by Lady Gaga’s costume changes and very theatrical performance. But based on many tweets and blog posts that night and the next day, many were quick to label Lady GaGa as worst dressed and weird—and I truly beg to differ.

Lady GaGa’s job is to ENTERTAIN and keep folks wanting to know what’s going to happen next, as well as keeping it coming with new, fresh and inventive looks for her persona.

She got her name from the song “Radio Gaga” sung by Queen, who evidently was her musical and fashion influence (google them youngsters lol).

Her fashion risks are reflections of her music. The same way Jay-z’s choice to wear all black everything reflects on what he raps about.

I’m more than certain GaGa doesn’t wear Phantom of the Opera masks when she goes grocery shopping, but these “costumes” are fitting to her brand. She’s always fashion forward and most of the ensembles she wears are couture versions of current fashion trends, and she is vastly becoming a muse to MANY prominent fashion designers, such as Marc Jacobs.

So I salute you, Lady Gaga, and world—-watch out, she’s about to TAKE OVER.

Gaga hits the VMA red carpet, her date (not seen in photo)—Kermit the Frog (lucky bishhh)

Lady Gaga hits the VMA press room wearing the Thierry Mugler ensemble inspired by her. (Told ya she’s quickly becoming a fashion muse.)

GaGa celebrates her win at her VMA after-party. Once again very couture. Remove the headpiece and the dress becomes “ready to wear.” *sigh* Im officially a GaGa stan! lol

Before Naomi took the title of Jamaica’s prized yet disgruntled supermodel. Before pretty girls shaved their heads for sport. And way before Lady Gaga could spell hermaphrodite, much less claim to be one (yeah, I don’t believe her), there was only ONE Queen of Shock and Awe.

The epitome of androgyny, Grace Jones.

Jones is best known to us 80’s babies as “Strange” (from the movie Boomerang) and better known to the 90’s babies as “…who?” (I joke I joke lol). Her style had a heavy influence on major fashion trends: the women’s cross-dressing movement of the 80’s as well as her famous “flat top” hairstyle that reigned supreme amongst black men in the late 80’s and early 90’s. (No, fellas, Big Daddy Kane didn’t do it first.)

As a recording artist, Jones has released 10 albums to date, best known for her hit single “Pull Up To My Bumper” (later covered by Reggae artist Patra). She is currently touring for her latest album, Hurricane (get ‘em gurl!).

[do you know when she released her first album? and how many records she has sold? could use that in the above paragraph]

One time muse for the late icon, Andy Warhol (google if you don’t know him), Grace’s style, beauty and “in your face” edge is truly undeniable . . . I dare you to turn away!

I’ve always been a rebel. I never do things the way they’re supposed to be done. Either I go in the opposite direction or I create a new direction for myself, regardless of what the rules are or what society says. ~ Grace Jones
